Methodology – How AdvisoryAtlas Works
Purpose of AdvisoryAtlas
AdvisoryAtlas aggregates official government travel advisories to provide a clear, comparative overview of travel risk levels worldwide. The purpose of this site is informational: to help users understand how different governments assess travel risks for the same destination.
AdvisoryAtlas does not issue travel advisories and does not replace official government guidance.
Sources of Information
AdvisoryAtlas relies exclusively on publicly available government travel advisory sources, including but not limited to:
- United States – Department of State
- Canada – Government of Canada Travel Advice
- United Kingdom – Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO)
- Australia – Smartraveller
- Ireland – Department of Foreign Affairs
- Japan – Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan
- Other official government sources when available
Each source retains its original authority, terminology, and update frequency.
Standardization of Risk Levels
Government travel advisories typically use a four-level risk framework, although wording and criteria vary.
To allow easier comparison, AdvisoryAtlas maps these advisories into a standardized Level 1 to Level 4 scale, while preserving the intent of the original source:
Important: This standardization is interpretive and does not modify the official advisory itself.
Differences Between Countries
It is common for governments to assign different risk levels to the same destination due to:
- Varying risk assessment methodologies
- Different diplomatic, security, or legal considerations
- Differences in citizen support capabilities abroad
AdvisoryAtlas highlights these differences to provide context, not to judge or rank governments.
Update Frequency
Advisory data is reviewed and updated regularly based on:
- Changes published by official sources
- Automated monitoring of advisory updates
However, AdvisoryAtlas does not guarantee real-time accuracy. Users must always verify information directly with official government websites before traveling.
Limitations and Disclaimer
- AdvisoryAtlas provides general informational content only
- It does not offer legal, medical, or security advice
- Travel conditions can change rapidly
- Final responsibility for travel decisions remains with the user
Transparency and Attribution
Whenever possible:
- Advisory sources are clearly identified
